Spanish for Spain (Castilian) is, besides the regional official languages, the official language in Spain, as well as one of the 24 official languages of the European Union. The Spanish language is spoken in Spain by about 38 million people as their mother tongue. Spanish is also the official language of the African Union, the Organization of American States, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, the Union of South American Nations and the United Nations.

The Spanish or Castilian language belongs to the Romance branch of the Indo-European language family and forms the closer unity of the Ibero-Romanic language family with Aragonese, Asturleonese, Galician and Portuguese.

Like the other Romance languages, Spanish has developed on the Iberian Peninsula from the spoken Latin language, the “Vulgar Latin”. However, loan words from Arabic also found their way into Spanish vocabulary. Since the 16th century, the terms “Castilian” and “Spanish” have largely been used synonymously for the language spoken in Spain.

The colonization of Latin America from the 16th century onwards ensured the great spread of the Spanish language. Today the Spanish language is spoken in numerous variants by about 440 million people worldwide as their mother tongue. Together with the people who speak Spanish as a second language, this number is about 550 million. After English, Mandarin and Hindi, Spanish is the fourth most spoken language in the world.

Most Spanish-speaking people outside Spain live in Central and South America, the Caribbean, Mexico and the USA. Larger Spanish-speaking minorities also live in Western Sahara, Equatorial Guinea, Morocco and the Philippines.

The worldwide spoken varieties of Spanish differ enormously from Spanish Castilian. There are great differences in grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, some of which are influenced by the language of indigenous populations.
