The Valencian language has been the official language of the Spanish region of Valencia since 1982, alongside Spanish.
Valencian is a language variant of the Catalan language spoken in the Autonomous Community of Valencia. It is spoken by about 2 million native speakers.
The Valencian language belongs to the Ibero-Roman branch of Romance languages and is closely related to Catalan, but also to Spanish (Castilian) and Galician.
Valencian dialects belong to the group of Western Catalan dialects, which also includes the western regions of Catalonia, the Catalan-speaking part of Aragon and Andorra. The dialects differ geographically depending on the region in vocabulary and pronunciation.
The Valencian orthography does not differ from the rest of the Catalan linguistic area. However, there are differences in grammar and vocabulary. The sentence structure usually follows the “subject-verb-object” scheme (SVO). A particularly difficult aspect of Valencian grammar is verb conjugation. There are many allomorphic endings for the same person with complementary distribution.
