Mandarin Chinese is the official language of the People’s Republic of China. It is by far the most widely spoken mother tongue in the world and is spoken by approximately 900 million people. Another 180 million people speak Mandarin Chinese as a second language.

Chinese in general knows many main dialects, which partly differ strongly from each other, among them for example Wu Chinese, Yue dialect (Cantonese), Jin Chinese, Xiang Chinese or Hakka Chinese.

Mandarin Chinese, the dialect-free Standard Chinese, was developed around 1930 for the purpose of communication between Chinese inhabitants: a standard language that everyone in China should understand. The Chinese writing system is quite complex and knows about 50,000 characters. However, about 3,000 to 4,000 characters are enough for everyday use. In the People’s Republic of China, Chinese is written in simplified Chinese. It differs from traditional Chinese by fewer character variants and a simplified representation of approx. 2,000 characters.

Chinese languages are tone languages (such as Thai or Vietnamese), which means that the meaning of the word changes with a change of tone.

Mandarin Chinese follows the SVO schema (subject-verb-object) in the sentence structure, as for example also English or German.
