Catalan is the official language of Andorra and, in addition to Spanish, the official regional language of Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Aragon, the Murcia region and Valencia. It is also one of the regional languages of France (in Roussillon and in the Pyrénées-Orientales) where it receives special support.

Catalan is spoken by around 11.5 million people, mainly in the so-called “Catalan countries” (Catalonia, parts of the Valencia region, the Balearic Islands, parts of Aragon, parts of southern France, Andorra).

The Catalan language belongs to the family of Romance languages. Some linguists consider Catalan to be one of the Gallo-Roman languages, others assign it to the Ibero-Roman branch, so that it is often referred to as a bridge language between Gallo-Roman and Ibero-Roman. Catalan today shares many similarities with other languages.

The Catalan language area can be divided into two dialect groups: The East Catalan dialects, which include the eastern part of Catalonia, the Catalan-speaking part of France, the Balearic Islands and Alguer, and the West Catalan dialects.

The Catalan alphabet consists of 26 Latin letters. The sentence structure usually follows the “subject-verb-object” sentence position (SVO), but the position of the subject is not strictly observed, it can also stand at the end of the sentence, depending on its meaning.
