The language English for India (Indian English) is the description for the variety of the English language, as it is spoken in India as an official and educational language. English is, along with Hindi, one of the co-official languages in India.

Indian English is usually not a mother tongue, but it is spoken as a second language and as a common language when people from different speech communities talk to each other. In India, English is spoken fluently only by a minority, depending on their position and educational level; the language is learned at schools and universities. In addition to around 320,000 native speakers, over 150 million Indians speak English as a second or third language.

The English language is a Germanic language that belongs to the West Germanic branch and was originally native to England. It developed from the early Middle Ages onwards through the immigration of North Sea Germanic peoples to Britain. The Anglo-Saxons and the Saxons, from whom the former common name of the language, Anglo-Saxon, is derived, were also among them. The present name “English” is derived from the Anglo-Saxon people.

The English vocabulary was initially strongly influenced by North Germanic languages. After the conquest of England by the Normans, terms from French also found their way into the English vocabulary. Of the languages still spoken today, the Frisian languages and Low German are closely related to English.

Starting from England, English spread across the entire British Isles and became a world language in Australia, Africa and India, mainly due to the colonization of America and the colonial policy of Great Britain.

The varieties of English spoken in India are often distinguished by a specific vocabulary, grammatical peculiarities and various regional pronunciations and accents. The pronunciation is strongly influenced by native Indian languages such as Hindi, Bengali or Tamil.

We have already implemented a number of projects in Indian English, including various web-based training courses (WBTs) for Sonic E-Learning; a corporate video for the chemical company Henkel; TV educational spots for the UNICEF and the production of telephone-based patient survey systems for the pharmaceutical company ICON.

Voice over recordings in Indian English are carried out in professional recording studios located in India. We work with native speakers who have a perfect command of the English language as it is spoken in India and who are trained professional voice talents.
