English for South Africa, also known as South African English, is one of eleven official languages in South Africa and is spoken as a mother tongue by almost 4 million people and as a second language by many other inhabitants. In South Africa, English also has the role of a lingua franca, i.e. a common language that enables the people of different languages to communicate with each other.

Like British English, the South African English language is one of the West Germanic languages within the Indo-European language family. Starting in England, English spread throughout the entire British Isles and has become a world language in Australia, New Zealand, Africa and India, mainly as a result of the settling of America and the colonial policy of Great Britain. The English language was introduced to South Africa by British settlers in 1820. Since that time, South African English has developed into an individual language variant of English.

South African English differs from British English primarily in its pronunciation. While there are many similarities in vocal and consonant phonemes, there are also some pronunciation variations. They are specific to the three main dialect groups of South African English: White South African English, Black South African English and Indian South African English. There are also differences in vocabulary, mainly due to loan words from the South African languages Afrikaans, Zulu and Xhosha. The spelling in South African uses both, American and British English.

We have already implemented several projects in South African English, including phone-based patient survey systems for the pharmaceutical companies ICON and Pfizer.

Voice over recordings in South African English are carried out in professional recording studios located in South Africa. We work with native speakers who have a perfect command of the South African variant of the English language and are trained professional voice talents.
