Kannada belongs like Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam to the Dravidian language family, which is mainly spread in South India. It is spoken mainly in the state of Karnataka by about 44 million native speakers and is the official language there.

Kannada is also spoken by minorities in the neighboring states of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and Goa. Kannada speaking people are called Kannadigas.

Kannada is mainly written in Kannada script, which is similar to Telugu script, whereby written and spoken language in Kannada differ significantly from each other. Kannada consists of four dialect groups, which in addition consist of further sub-dialects. The spoken language of the educated urban population of Bangalore and Mysore has established itself as the supra-regional conversational language.

Grammatically, Kannada follows the SOV scheme (subject-object-verb) in its sentence structure. Accordingly, the subject comes first in the sentence and the predicate is always at the end of the sentence, as in Turkish, for example. Kannada is an agglutinative language and expresses the relations of words through suffixes.
