Telugu is a language from the Dravidian language family and is mainly spoken in the southern Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where it also serves as an official language. Telugu is recognized as one of India’s 22 constitutional languages on a supra-regional level.
Telugu is spoken by over 80 million people in southern India. After Hindi, Bengali and Marathi it is the fourth most spoken language in India. In addition to the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where there are over 70 million native speakers, Telugu is also spoken by minorities in the neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Like many Indian languages, the Telugu vocabulary contains a large proportion of Sanskrit loan words.
