Romanian is the official language of Romania, Moldova, one of the official languages of the Autonomous Serbian Province of Vojvodina, one of the official languages of the Autonomous Orthodox Monastic Republic of Athos in Greece and one of the 24 official languages of the European Union. In the Republic of Moldova, Romanian was referred to as the “Moldovan language” from 1994 to 2013.

Romanian is spoken by about 34 million people. Among them are about 30 million native speakers. In Romania the language is spoken as a mother tongue by approx. 85 % of the population. This corresponds to about 17 million people. In the Republic of Moldova, Romanian is spoken by about 2.6 million native speakers, which corresponds to about 65% of the total population. A large number of Romanian-speaking people live in Ukraine, Serbia, Hungary, English for the United States of America and Canada.

Romanian is a Romansh language from the Italian branch of the Indo-European language tribe. It is the most easterly Romance language and thus originates from Latin, which was spoken in the Roman provinces along the Danube. Romanian is thus closely related to Italian, but it also uses loan words originating in Slavonic and other languages of neighboring countries.

Romanian is an umbrella term for the four languages Dakoromanian, Aromunian, Meglenoromanian and Istroromanian. The standardized form of Dakoromanian is generally referred to as the Romanian language.
