Malay, more precisely “Bahasa Malaysia”, is the official language in Malaysia and is spoken there by approx. 29 million people as their mother tongue. About 170 million other people speak Malay as a second language.

Malay is closely related to Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia). The differences between the two languages are mainly due to the influence of different colonization’s: In Indonesia it was the Dutch and in Malaysia the British colonial emperors. Most of the differences between the two languages can be found in the vocabulary.

Since the English colonization many new words developed in the Malay language, which did not exist before: e.g. the word “ekzos”, which originated from the English term “exhaust”.

Since the end of the 20th century, Malay has been using the Latin writing system, before that, it was written with Arabic script.

The pronunciation of the Malay language is relatively simple because, unlike other languages, there are almost no phonetic peculiarities.

Malay grammar is very simple: There is no genus, tempus, numerus and also no flexion. The plural is often formed by a so-called reduplication (doubling), so the majority of “orang” (human) is then “orang-orang”. Malay follows the SVO-schema (subject-verb-object), as for example also French or German.

We have already implemented a number of projects in Malay, including e-learning courses for chip manufacturer Infineon; voice prompts for defibrillator manufacturer Zoll Medical and TV commercials for Alpecin and Plantur 39, brands of cosmetics manufacturer Dr. Wolff.
