Mandarin Chinese is the official language of the Republic of China (Taiwan). It is by far the most widely spoken mother tongue in the world and spoken by approximately 900 million people. Traditional Chinese differs from simplified Chinese in more character variants and a more complex representation of approximately 2,000 characters.

Chinese languages are tone languages (such as Thai or Vietnamese), which means that the meaning of the word changes with a change of tone.

Mandarin Chinese follows the SVO schema (subject-verb-object) in the sentence structure, as for example also English or German.
