The language Thai is the official language in Thailand. Approximately 20 million people speak Thai as their mother tongue, and another 40 million speak it as a second language.

Thai belongs to the Thai languages within the Tai Kadai language family and is a tone language, such as Cantonese or Vietnamese. Words, which often consist of only one syllable, acquire a completely different meaning through pronunciation in different pitches and gradients.

The standard language of Thai, Standard Thai, is based on the Central Thai, as for example educated people in the capital Bangkok speak it. Thai also knows many dialects, which are spoken by the vast majority of Thai in everyday life. The differences between the dialects and the Standard Thai are sometimes so great that linguists tend to classify individual dialects as independent languages. The Thai dialects have no official status: In schools, universities, press and the media almost exclusively Standard Thai is used, which every Thai native speaker understands. The Thai script has its own alphabet and uses the Abugida font, in which the letters are not strictly arranged according to the spoken order.

The grammar of the Thai language, on the other hand, is not very complex: As for example with Vietnamese there are no word changes (flexions) and no articles with Thai. The sentence structure in Thai also follows the SVO scheme (subject verb object), as for example in English, German or French. Somewhat more complicated are the extensive possibilities of salutations, which express the social relationship to the interlocutor.
