Swedish is the official language of Sweden and Finland and one of the 24 official languages of the European Union. Almost 8.5 million people speak Swedish as their mother tongue and another 2 million as a second language.
The Swedish language belongs to the Scandinavian languages within the Indo-European language family. It is closely related to the languages Danish and Norwegian. The vocabulary contains many loan words from the German and English languages.
The Swedish grammar is relatively simple. The various cases of nouns have disappeared in Swedish. The sentence structure in the Swedish language follows the SVO scheme (subject-verb-object), as for example also in English, German or French. Swedish uses the Latin script with its own alphabet. In Swedish there are only two genders, the Utrum for male and female and the Neutrum for neuter. Upper and lower case is also simple: Only at the beginning of the sentence and for proper names are words capitalized, all other words are written in lower case.
Swedish has many dialects with about 300-500 variants, which can be divided into six large areas: Sydsvenska mål, Götamål, Sveamål, Norrländska mål, Götländska mål and Finlandsvenska (Finland Swedish). The Swedish standard language is called “Rikssvenska” and has uniform pronunciation rules and spelling.
