Finland Swedish (or Fenno-Swedish) is a variety of the Swedish language as it is spoken in the Finnish border region with Sweden by almost 300,000 Swedish-speaking people as their mother tongue.
Finland Swedish belongs to the Scandinavian languages within the Indo-European language family. As with standard Swedish, Finland Swedish is closely related to Danish and Norwegian. The standard Swedish vocabulary contains various loan words from the German and English languages. The Finland Swedish vocabulary also contains loan words from Finnish.
The biggest differences to standard Swedish can be found in pronunciation, melody of speech, vocabulary and, in rare cases also in grammar. Finland Swedish uses the Latin script with the Swedish alphabet. It has two genders and is generally seen to have two grammatical cases, nominative and genitive.
