Flemish (also called Flemish Dutch) is a dialect of standard Dutch and is spoken as a mother tongue or second language by approximately 3 million people in the West and East Flanders regions of Belgium.

Flemish belongs to the West Germanic languages within the Indo-European language family.

However, the official languages of Belgium are Belgian French and Belgian Dutch. Both language variants differ from the standard languages spoken in the two neighboring countries mainly by some Belgian characteristics. Written and spoken Flemish, the Dutch dialect in Flanders, differs from standard Dutch primarily in pronunciation, sentence melody and vocabulary. For example, when addressing people, forms are used that are considered too formal and old-fashioned for standard Dutch.

The sentence structure of Flemish follows the SVO scheme (subject-verb-object), as for example also in English, German or Russian.
