The language Dari (also Dari Persian or Afghan Persian) is besides Pashto the official language in Afghanistan. The term Dari has been officially used by the Afghan government for the Persian language since 1964 to distinguish it from the Farsi language.

About 15 million Afghans speak Dari as their mother tongue, and about 50 million people speak Persian (Dari and Farsi) as their second language.

The population of 50 to 70 million native speakers call the Persian language Dari or Farsi; it is the most frequently spoken Indo-European language in West and Central Asia. It is also spoken in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and Dagestan (Russia).

Persian has been written in Arabic since the Arab conquest. In order to be able to reproduce sounds that did not exist in Arabic, the Arabic alphabet was extended by four additional letters, so that the Persian alphabet now comprises 32 letters. Only in Tajikistan and the other states of the former Soviet Union the Cyrillic script used.

The dialects Farsi and Dari are very similar; the formal differences between the two languages are not very significant. However, both languages differ in the spoken language clearly, since different terms and pronunciation variants are used in the different dialects.

In comparison to Farsi, where linguists take care to reduce foreign influences, Dari allows different loan words from English.

Dari is a very “bloomy” language, which uses many paraphrases. When recording speech, there is a risk that translations into Persian may be much longer than the original text. This must be considered, especially if time-synchronous recordings are required, so text often needs to be shortened.

For cultural reasons, male speakers are often used in Persian audio productions, even if the text in the source media are spoken by women.

We have already implemented several projects in Dari, including recordings for educational and training films; soundtracks for a language course and language recordings of TV commercials for Roshan.

Voice over recordings in Dari are carried out in professional recording studios. We work with native speakers who have a perfect command of the Dari language and are trained professional voice talents.
